What is a White Homing Pigeon/Dove?

Our birds are referred to as "Columba livia domestica" or better known as White Homing Pigeons. They are an incredibly intelligent species bred not only for their beauty, but their outstanding homing capabilities. Traditional white doves are nearly identical, but are much smaller in size and have less defined features.

Why do we release White Homing Pigeons instead of Doves?

Within the white dove release community, white homing pigeons are most typically used. This is due to a couple of different factors:

1. Homing Capabilities

Homing pigeons are known for their outstanding capabilities in navigation, and instinctually know how to return to their lofts indefinitely. Essentially having a built-in navigational system! Although also very intelligent, doves are known to impulsively relocate their "homes" and are not guaranteed to return back to the safety of their keeper's loft. Not wanting to risk the safety of our birds, this is why most releasers choose to breed White Homing Pigeons.

2. Size & Color

Homing Pigeons are typically slightly larger in size in comparison to traditional doves. Resulting in their signature long tails, wide wingspan, and elongated beaks. They also have greater variances is colors such as a bright white and can have varied color patterning.

How do we prepare our doves for a release flight?

Although our doves naturally have homing capabilities, we meticulously train our doves within our service range. Three days prior to a dove release we do a training roughly 1/3 of the milage in the direction of the service date. Two days prior we train at 2/3 of the milage, and one day prior from the release location that is set to take place the following day. This guarantees our doves are prepared and confident, ensuring a safe journey back to their loft
